How does RedBird fit clubs?
We fit our golf equipment using a combination of static and dynamic
methods.
On-site at our Seattle location, we start with a static fitting and
interview process. This information provides us with a valid starting
point. We then proceed to our indoor golf simulator for the dynamic
portion of the fit. The simulator provides accurate data on clubhead
speed, ball flight, clubhead path, face angle, tempo, and distance.
This information allows us to fine-tune the fit.
How long does a fitting session take?
Most fitting sessions run between 25 and 45 minutes.
I see the term "dynamic fitting" in many places. What
is dynamic fitting?
"Dynamic fitting" is a method of fitting a golfer's swing
to golf clubs through the use of a lie board and observation ball flight.
Dynamic fitting using a lie board works best with swings that are consistent
and free from major flaws.
What is static fitting?
Static fitting involves determining each golfer's unique set of physical
attributes, physical limitations, and golf-related goals, and using
this information to build equipment to precisely fit the individual
golfer.
What is the story behind lie boards?
Recently the use of a lie board has been in vogue as the "clubfitter's"
tool. The lie board is a valid tool when the marks are properly analyzed.
During the fitting session, lie board results should always be interpreted
in conjunction with static observations. Use of the lie board alone
has a tendency to produce contrary corrections in the golf club to accommodate
swing flaws present during the fitting session. When the club is built
to counteract swing flaws, the golfer¹s improvement will be stifled,
as the club will produce good results only when the swing flaws are
present.
I'm a new golfer. Should I have custom fitted clubs?
Yes! We recommend a static method for fitting new golfers. Beginning
the game with a set of clubs that fit the golfer's physical attributes
properly will facilitate improvement because proper swing motion will
be rewarded with good shots.
What type of shaft is best for my game: steel or graphite?
The best shaft for your swing depends on your swing speed, ball trajectory,
and preference for feel. We recommend that you hit both types of shafts
during a fitting session at an authorized RedBird fitting center to
determine which shaft performs best for your game.
What is flex?
Flex refers to the amount a shaft will bend during the swing. When
the flex has been properly fitted, the shaft will bend back (lag) during
the downswing and recover to a straight or slightly forward position
at impact, delivering the clubhead in a square position with maximum
clubhead speed. A shaft that is too flexible will not be strong enough
to unload properly, resulting in high trajectories and control problems.
A shaft that is too stiff will not be loaded fully on the downswing,
resulting in losses in distance and poor control, and a tendency to
hit the ball low and to the right.
What is torsional flexibility (torque)?
Torsional flexibility refers to the shaft's flex around its axis. Torsional
flexibility should be considered when fitting flex, and matched in a
consistent fashion. Generally, the lower the shaft torsional flexibility,
the stiffer the shaft will feel. Too little torsional flex results in
a very stiff feeling shaft that won't load completely. Too much torsional
flex will cause the shaft to feel soft and can cause timing-related
control problems. Steel shafts range between 1.5 and 3.5 in torsional
stiffness and better graphite shafts range between 1.6 and 5.
What is a flexpoint?
Flexpoint refers to the shaft's flex distribution. As a rule the higher
the flexpoint, the lower the shot trajectory and the stiffer the feel.
The lower the flexpoint, the higher the shot trajectory and the softer
the feel.
What is a lie angle?
Lie angle is an important fitting variable, with the importance growing
as iron loft increases. Irons with incorrect lie angles will consistently
produce shots of poor directional quality. Golf irons that are too upright
(toe elevated at impact) will consistently produce shots that are pulled;
irons that are too flat (heel elevated at impact) will consistently
produce shots that are pushed. Irons with the proper lie angle will
strike the ground at a point on the sole in direct relation to the center
of the clubface. Correct lie angle combined with a square clubface and
correct swing path will produce shots on line to the target.
What is iron loft angle?
Iron loft angle plays a key role in determining trajectory and distance
the ball will travel. Properly set incremental loft angles improve consistency
and playability. We check and set all of our irons to our standard specifications
during the manufacturing process. When iron loft is set properly to
incremental standards, shot consistency and control benefit. We recommend
standard iron loft angles for the majority of players. In the case of
a player with less than optimum shot trajectory, iron lofts can be modified
to improve trajectory. Iron loft can be weakened up to 2° to help
the player with lower than optimum trajectory and made up to 2°
stronger to help those with higher than desired trajectory.
What is offset?
Offset refers to the position of the hosel in relation to the leading
edge of the club. The leading edge of the 950 is farther back than that
of the LPS. More offset makes it easier for the average player to square
the clubface at impact, while reduced offset affords the skilled player
with more control of trajectory and enhanced maneuverability.
